IMPORTANT INFORMATION (all ages)

1.  REQUIRED: Pre-Register Online July 1st until Aug. 20th (10:59 pm)

     For instructions, go to Online Entry Instructions or see the front of a fair book under General Fair Information. 

     

*NOTE: When registering, under Description, list media and a brief description (example: oil landscape)

 

2. Ages 11 and up: See Framing Instructions to prepare your art for hanging.  Deliver prepared and pre-registered artwork to the northwest corner of the Home Arts Building on Tuesday from 1-8pm. 

 

3.  No entry fees required.

 

4.  Premiums (cash awards) and gift cards may be picked up in the southeast corner of the Home Arts Building on Thursday from 10-4, Friday from 10am-10pm, and Saturday from 10 AM-10:30 PM.  People’s Choice cash awards will be available for pick-up with premiums on Saturday.

 

5.  Entries will be released between 9:30-10:30 on Saturday night. Any

     remaining entries will be available for pick-up on Monday from 9am-6pm.

 

6.  Reasonable precautions will be taken in handling all entries, but the Fair Board and its management cannot assume liability for loss or damage to submitted works. We are not responsible for any unclaimed items or premiums after 10:30 p.m. on Saturday.


RULES (ages 11 and up)

1.Ages 11 and up:  Artwork (except sculpture and pottery) MUST be ready to hang (see Framing Instructions).

 

2.Ages 11 and up: 1 Entry allowed for judging in each category/medium Example: An exhibitor may enter one oil, one acrylic, one sculpture, etc.  Additional entries in like categories (or as desired) may be entered for display only and will not be judged or receive ribbons.

 

3.Ages 19 and up:  Artwork must be entered in the highest division in which it was entered in previous years.

 

4.ALL artwork must be completed within the last three years.

 

5.ALL artwork MUST be original – entirely the work of the artist.  NO paint-by-numbers, coloring book pages, etc. allowed in Fine Arts. These may be entered in Home Arts under Crafts & Hobbies.

 

6.Work entered in previous fairs may not be entered again for judging OR for display only.

 

7.Paintings with wet paint will be rejected.

 

8.Entries that are inappropriate for family viewing will be rejected.

 

9.Entries, including display only, are restricted to residents of Box Elder County.

 

10.ALL artwork MUST be left on exhibit until 9:30pm on Saturday.  


FRAMING INSTRUCTIONS (ages 11 and up)

Artwork in the youth and adult classes will be hung on large hooks, therefore the following is required:

1.  Canvas-stretched artwork may be framed or unframed, but must have screw eyes and wire on the back (positioned ⅓ down from the top). Wire should not show above the frame.

 

2. Artwork on illustration board, any type of paper, canvas board, etc. must be presented in ONE of the following ways:

a. Framed with screw eyes and wire on the back.

b. Framed with secure claw tooth hanger(s) on the back.

c. Professionally shrink-wrapped with sticky-backed plastic    

    hanger(s) on the back (centered and positioned 2” below the top).

*Note - Larger artwork requires 2 hangers.

JUDGING 

1. All judging will be based on individual merit.

2. Work will be judged on the following: Overall design, composition, use of art elements, creativity, originality, skill, technique, and presentation.

3. Each judged entry will receive a ribbon and a premium.  

4. Judges are professional artists and new judges (for ages 11 and up) are chosen each year from outside of Box Elder County.  Their decisions are final.  


SWEEPSTAKES AWARD (ages 11 and up)

 Only original works will be eligible. 

1.  Awarded to the judge’s favorite piece overall.

2.  No copies of other artists’ work will be considered.

3.  An artist may only be awarded Sweepstakes every third year.

4.  Winner receives a special ribbon, $15 premium, and a Mountain Valley Printing gift card.


 SPECIAL MERIT AWARDS (ages 5 and up & Poetry)

10 Special Merits will be awarded to the pieces the judge feels are outstanding in each class/division, one award given in each.

Winners each receive a special ribbon, premium, and a Mountain Valley Printing gift card.


 LORI NICHOLAS PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS

One Adult Award (ages 19 and up)

One Child/Youth Award (ages 5–18)

During the fair, the public will be allowed to vote for their favorite artwork. These special ribbons and cash awards will be given to one adult and one youth, in remembrance of renowned local western artist and former Fine Arts director, Lori Nicholas (1951-2019). 

 

People’s Choice Voting Rules

  1. Only one vote per adult and one vote per youth/child, per person, will be allowed. 

  2. Look for numbered stickers on artwork tags(except children’s). Select your two number choices (or child’s name) and report them to the Fine Arts supervisor on duty.

  3. Display items and photography are NOT included in the voting.

  4. Voting begins Wednesday at 6pm and ends Friday at 10pm.


DIRECTOR’S CHOICE AWARDS

One Adult Award (ages 19 and up)

One Youth Award (ages 11–18)

Awarded to one adult and one youth whose artwork did not receive Sweepstakes or Special Merit, but is deemed outstanding by the Fine Arts directors.

Winners each receive a special ribbon, $7 premium, and a Mountain Valley Printing gift card.

7.  Sculpture:  Clay, Stone, Metal, Wood, Polymer Clay, Wax, Marble, 

     Assemblage, Papier-mâché, etc.

8.  Pottery/Ceramics:  Porcelain, Earthenware, Stoneware, Ball Clay, etc.  MUST be hand-built or wheel-thrown, kiln-fired, and the ENTIRE work of the artist from greenware stage to finished piece.

 9. Paper Art:  Collage, Paper-cutting, Quilling, etc.

10. Digital Art:  Digital art is an artistic practice that uses digitial technology as part of the creative process. Entries must be original digital work created by the artist, including digitial illustrations.

11. Other:  Mixed Media, Fluid Art, etc.

CLASS A – Professional

One who has a degree and/or three or more years of extensive training, and/or teaches art classes, and is actively engaged in the art field for financial gain.

 


CLASS B – Semi-professional

One who has a degree or extensive training in fine arts and occasionally sells their artwork, but does not rely on those sales as their primary income. This classification is a matter of ability and attitude more than career.

 


CLASS C – Advanced Amateur

One who has some training, but not a degree in Fine Arts. They consistently strive to improve and produce artwork for both enjoyment and/or some financial gain.

 


CLASS D – Amateur

One who has little or no training but enjoys producing artwork as a hobby only and has never sold any artwork.

 


CLASS E – Seniors

Age 65 and over as of August 1, 2023

Fair Book Cover Contest 

Every spring the Fair Book Cover Contest is open to ALL students in Box Elder County, grades 8-12 (ages 13-18). The winning cover receives $20 and a family rodeo pass. One runner up will receive a $10 food court pass.  Ten honorable mentions will each receive $5 food court passes. Children’s Art Rules

1.  REQUIRED: Parents/guardians, you must Pre-Register your child Online 

 

2.  ALL artwork MUST be original – entirely the work of the artist.  NO coloring book pages, paint-by-numbers, kits, etc. allowed in Fine Arts. Enter these in Home Arts under Crafts & Hobbies.

3.  Due to limited space, only one entry per child. No Display Only entries.

4. NO FRAMED ARTWORK accepted. Artwork will be secured with Velcro or hung on curtain hooks on carpet-covered wall, therefore:

  1. Art sized 8½ x 11 must be placed in sheet protectors (available for 25 cents, if needed).  

  2. Larger art on paper must be professionally shrink-wrapped with plastic hanger(s) on back.

  3. Paintings on canvas board require plastic hanger(s) centered on the back, 1-2” below the top.

  4. Paintings on stretched canvas require screw eyes and wire (positioned ⅓ down from the top). 

5.  All mediums (paint, crayon, pencil, etc.) accepted.

6.  Class/school art work will be accepted.

7.  One Special Merit ribbon, $5 premium, and Mt. Valley Printing gift card will each be awarded in Classes H-I.

8.  Children’s Art entries will NOT be considered for the Sweepstakes Award. 

9.  Class J entries will not be judged, but will each receive $1 and a purple participation ribbon.

Written & Illustrated Literature Rules

1. Literature must be ALL original with original illustrations. 

 

2. Entries may be typed or neatly handwritten, with illustrations done in any media, however, presentation WILL be considered in judging. 

 

3. Cover and author page is required. 

 

4. Only ONE ENTRY per exhibitor is allowed for judging. Additional entries by the same exhibitor will be for display only and will not be judged or receive a ribbon.

 

5. School work is accepted.

6. Written and Illustrated Literature is not eligible for the Special Merit Award.

 

 Poetry Rules

  1. Entries must be original and may be typed or neatly handwritten. 

  2. Poetry may be presented in sheet protectors OR framed and ready to hang with picture frame wire or a plastic hanger. Please visit Mountain Valley Printing for assistance or for a small fee, help with wires and hangers will be available on Registration Day. Sheet Protectors will also be available for 25 cents, as needed.  There will also be a limited number of sheet protectors available for 25 cents each during registration.

  3. Only ONE ENTRY per exhibitor will be allowed for judging.  Additional entries by the same exhibitor will be for display only and will not be judged or receive a ribbon.

  4. School work is accepted.

  5. One Special Merit ribbon and $6 premium will be awarded to the outstanding poem.

  6. We will not be responsible for broken/damaged/defective frames.
